MGM Grand Hotel and Casino honors their heritage. The original lion you see and hear roar at the introduction to an MGM movie was named Leo. To honor lions everywhere and to help preserve them in perpetuum they have created a special lion habitat on an 8 ½ acre ranch 12 miles from town. But you don't need to go to the ranch to see these magnificent creatures. Right inside the entrance from Las Vegas Blvd. you will see a lush habitat inhabited by a rotating cast of characters from the ranch. These majestic beasts are the offspring of Leo.
At a cost of almost nine million dollars this soundproof and safe (they are behind an inch and a half thick glass enclosure) piece of paradise is green and climate controlled there is even a waterfall where nearby the lions groom and play and nap a lot. To keep the lions from being stressed by all the activity around them they are rotated twice a day so the lions you see this morning will probably not be the same ones you see at dinner.
Returning to accommodations, with 6,852 rooms in four 30-story towers this is the 3rd largest hotel in the world. The sight from the street is truly amazing as you marvel at the 45-foot, 100,000-pound bronze lion statue and see the immense video screens, you really do feel you are in some place unique.
